Two-day training on enhancing community base capacity to enforce The Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPP).

The workshop aimed to address the pressing issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Borno State. We particularly focus on enhancing the awareness, comprehension, and implementation of the VAPP Law among key stakeholders, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders.
The training workshop aimed to equip women-led and youth-led organizations with guidelines and information for organizing, facilitating, and encouraging community participation in implementing the VAPP Law. It introduced the concept of community conversations as a participatory, transformative, and collaborative learning approach and reviewed some interactive learning methods used in community conversations.

The training was participatory with practical collaborative learning sessions to equip participants with knowledge of the Law, skills, and confidence to apply the knowledge received at the training at the community level. It involved task-based reflective and collaborative learning sessions where participants came up with action plans to support and promote the implementation of the VAPP Law and a follow-up plan to ensure accountability in small group activities.

In addition, monitoring and recap sessions were used to get feedback from participants and check on their learnings throughout the two-day workshop. The recap and reflection sessions were particularly helpful for participants to reflect on their key learnings relate these with their experiences and consider how to apply the new learnings in their communities.

The participants developed action plans for applying the learnings and to convene community conversations and participation in their various communities.

The training workshop covered the following topics:

  • Meaning of the VAPP Law.
  • The purpose of the Law.
  • An overview of the content of the Law.
  • Various remedies are available for victims of violence.
  • Strategies for supporting and promoting the implementation of the VAPP Law.
  • Action plan and follow-up.
